Brett holds a post-graduate diploma in Autism & Behavioural Science. He uses ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis) as one of his many tools to support children with Autism and their parents. He also provides parenting support and education to parents of newly diagnosed children or to help support them with struggles in the home or at school. Brett is currently a clinical intern at our Kincardine location, offering $50 sessions on Monday and Tuesday afternoon and evenings.
How ABA Works:
Positive Reinforcement: Brett will reward desired actions, like using a new word or sharing a toy, with praise. This makes the child more likely to repeat the action. At home you can use praise along with their favourite item.
Breaking Down Skills: Complex tasks—like getting dressed or holding a pencil—are split into small, easy-to-learn steps. Parents can be educated on how to use a task chart at home.
Individual Plans: This is one area Brett cannot perform while he is not under the supervision of an ABA-specific supervisor during his practicum with us, but in the future, this would look like the creation of programs tailored to each child's specific needs, focusing on communication, social interaction, and daily living. Brett can teach these skills to you and your child, but cannot specify it as a "treatment plan". You can read more about these approaches through organizations like Autism Speaks. The Benefits of ABA:
Better Communication: Helps children express their needs using speech, gestures, or devices.
Life Skills: Builds independence with routines like eating, toileting, and going to school.
Reduced Stress: Provides tools to lower meltdowns and aggressive behaviors.
